Danson House & Down House

Thursday, 01 July 2010
Our excursion combines two historical houses of note. Firstly, Danson House, built by Sir John Boyd in the eighteenth century, sits in its own formal grounds within the estate. The house was built in the Palladian style by architect Robert Taylor and was recently restored by English Heritage over a ten year period having fallen into a ruinous state. The Breakfast Room is a delightful tea room offering a selection of refreshments and light lunches. You will rejoin the coach for the short journey to Down House. Charles Darwin lived with his family in Down House for 40 years; here he researched and wrote his most famous and explosive works, spending a great deal of time in the garden, experimenting and thinking. He personally made many changes and additions to the typically Victorian gardens including the building of high flint walls, and the planting of many apple trees. Take time to browse the herbaceous borders and rose gardens, and be sure to visit the gift shop before relaxing in the tea room, where you can enjoy a wide selection of light lunches and refreshments.

It boasts cottages, a church, almshouses and a watermill with the old brick and flint walls. This is backed by the Elizabethan mansion and the still-older manor house of Mapledurham Gurney. Together they retain an ancient village layout which is rare today. Mapledurham House, still the home of the descendants of the original family, is an Elizabethan Manor House situated beside the Thames and sheltered by the Chiltern Hills. Visitors can enjoy the collection of portraits, furniture, the great oak staircases and original plaster ceilings. There has a been a mill on this site since Saxon times and the present building dates from the 15th century, making it the only surviving working watermill on the Thames. Seeing the traditional machinery in action is one of the highlights of a visit to Mapledurham. The wholemeal flour ground here (and its by-products of bran and semolina) can be purchased in both the Mill Shop and the Gift Shop, along with other mementoes. Picnic tables are set out on the delightful Mill Island or you can picnic along the bank of the River Thames in the country park. Cream Teas are available in the tearooms in the 14th century Old Manor, and can be enjoyed at the tables set on the lawns sloping down to the inside of the Manor Stables. Jane Austen House & The Vyne House

Tuesday, 07 September 2010
Firstly we travel to the House of Jane Austen, one of the most popular and important novelists that England has ever produced. The 17th century house at Chawton is where she spent the last eight years of her life. It is of international importance as the place where she did the majority of her mature writing, but at the same time retains the charm of a village home. You will have over 2 hours here before you rejoin the coach for a short journey to The Vyne House. Originally built as a great Tudor ‘power house’, The Vyne was visited by King Henry VIII on at least three occasions and was later home to the Chute family for more than 350 years. Dramatic improvements and changes over the centuries have made The Vyne a fascinating microcosm of changing fads and fashions over five centuries. The house is filled with the original family collection – an eclectic mix of fine furniture, portraits, textiles and sculpture. The attractive gardens and grounds feature an ornamental lake, one of the earliest summerhouses in England and woodland walks. A flourishing wetlands area, with bird hide, attracts a wide diversity of wildlife. Refreshment can be taken at the Brewhouse adjacent to the house or the Kiosk in the tea-garden. Coach ticket includes admission to both venues.

St Omer & La Coupole (France) via Ferry

Tuesday, 05 October 2010
A continental excursion with a difference. Situated in the Pas-de-Calais, 5 km from the town of Saint Omer, La Coupole is a gigantic underground bunker designed by the Nazis in 1943-1944 to store, prepare and launch the V2 rockets. The first missiles to reach the stratosphere, this was the secret weapon that Hitler was counting on to destroy London and reverse the course of the war. Rehabilitated as a History and Remembrance Centre, La Coupole reveals, in an impressive setting, the challenges of total war and the stages in the conquest of space which paradoxically resulted from the V2 technology. The Centre also expands on the theme of the German occupation from 1940 to 1945 in the Nord Pas-de-Calais, one of the hardest hit regions during the “dark years”. Numerous audio-visual documentaries will enable you to explore these two major themes in the collective European memory at your own pace, thanks to infrared audio-guide headsets. We break the return journey with a stop in Saint Omer, which in the 13th Century was as prosperous as Bruges, another medieval town surrounded by water. The beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral took three centuries to complete and is widely recognised as the most beautiful intact vestige of gothic architecture to be found north of Paris, housing a famous Rubens painting of Christ being removed from the cross as well as an incredible astrological clock, said to be one of the oldest clocks in France, dating from 1558, and showing days, months, signs of the Zodiac and, of course, the time. Coach ticket includes admission to La Coupole.

Squerryes Court

Sunday, 10 October 2010
The little-known Squerryes Court is a beautiful privately-owned 17th century manor house near Westerham, Kent, set in 20 acres of attractive and historic gardens which include a lake, restored parterres and an 18th century dovecote. The house contains a fine collection of Old Master paintings, furniture, porcelain and tapestries, all acquired or commissioned by the family in the 18th century. General Wolfe of Quebec was a friend of the family and there are many items connected with him in the Wolfe Room. The formal gardens offer attractive planting for colour and interest throughout the year. Whilst the garden and lake were altered considerably in the middle of the 18th century, the bones of the old formal garden can still be seen. Following the Great Storm of October 1987, hedges, avenues and parterres have been re-planted in the style of the original garden. The latest restoration project is woodland walks in the wild garden. You will be taken on a guided tour of the house with ample time to stroll around the gardens. Refreshments are available on site.
