Take Shelter

Take Shelter is a dedicated volunteer community group who runs the only school air raid shelter open to the public in the UK located under the playground at Downs Junior School in Brighton. During the war every school would have had an air raid shelter. Take Shelter’s shelter was built in 1939 and, after the war, lay dormant until 2012.

Since 2012 the shelter has been restored and the team have created an underground museum. Take Shelter’s aim is to capture as many wartime memories as possible with the shelter providing the ideal stimulus for veterans to share their memories and the perfect backdrop for those who come to listen.

To enable to achieve this aim Take Shelter are fundraising to build a new accessible entrance to the shelter to enable them to share the Take Shelter experience with more people of all ages and abilities.
