Electric Buses in Brighton and Hove
From April 2026, 16 brand-new zero-emission electric buses will be joining our fleet, marking a major milestone in the city of Brighton and Hove’s journey towards greener transport and our ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and creating cleaner air for everyone in our city.
The arrival of electric buses to Brighton is part of a £10.5 million investment in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council: £2.9 million was secured via the Department for Transport's ZEBRA 2 fund, with £7 million invested by Brighton & Hove Buses and £600K by Brighton & Hove City Council.
The state-of-the-art buses will first be appearing on route 7, a service providing critical links across the city to education, work, healthcare and leisure facilities and onwards travel via Brighton and Hove train stations.
The 16 StreetDeck Electroliner Generation 2 vehicles by Wrightbus are each equipped with a 442kWh battery pack and deliver best-in-class range of 275 miles, passenger comfort and feature rapid charging.
To help remove barriers to travel, Brighton & Hove Buses continues to co-design and co-produce its services, embedding lived experience at every stage. We work in partnership with disability organisations and community groups, including Possability People, Grace Eyre, RNID, Guide Dogs, Thomas Pocklington Trust and local Sight Loss Councils.
Our 16 new electric buses build on accessibility features shaped through this ongoing collaboration. Designed with disabled people, representative organisations and manufacturers, and informed by continuous passenger feedback, these buses help ensure a more accessible service for all.
Features include two wheelchair bays, dementia-friendly flooring, next-stop audio and visual announcements, induction loops, improved layouts, clearer information, and increased space for mobility aids and buggies.
These are further enhanced by a new dementia-friendly seating moquette, co-designed and co-produced by the 'Rusty Brains' dementia group from Alzheimer’s Society.
Together, this collaborative and evolving approach ensures our electric buses are not only better for the environment, but create a more inclusive, accessible and dementia-friendly experience for all our communities.
Rupert Cox, Interim Manager Director at Brighton & Hove Buses said:
We’re thrilled to celebrate the launch of our brand-new electric buses in Brighton & Hove. As part of our ongoing partnership working with Brighton & Hove City Council and our commitment towards achieving net-zero and cleaner air for our community, this is a huge step for our city.
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, added:
16 new fully electric double decker buses demonstrates the huge investment being made into clean and sustainable travel in Brighton & Hove. Working in partnership with Brighton & Hove Buses, our successful bid for ZEBRA2 funding will benefit everyone in the city.
