Dementia Action Week: Celebrating co-design and co-production

2 months ago Mon 18th May 2026

Dementia Action Week (18th - 24th May 2026) is an annual awareness campaign led by Alzheimer’s Society, bringing people and organisations together to act on dementia.

At Brighton & Hove Buses, we’re committed to making our buses accessible for all through co-production and co-design, embedding lived experience at every stage.

This year for Dementia Action Week, we are proud to celebrate our long-standing commitment to accessibility and share the story of our dementia-friendly seating moquette, co-designed and co-produced with Alzheimer’s Society Horsham Rusty Brains Dementia Voice Group.

The moquette, now featured across 16 brand-new electric buses in Brighton and Hove, was developed alongside Horsham Rusty Brains by those with lived experience of dementia.

The Dementia Voice Group works together to influence Alzheimer’s Society and other organisations at all levels, meaning members living with dementia make a difference locally, regionally and nationally.

The seating moquette development process included a workshop in Horsham with the Brighton & Hove Buses team and Rusty Brains group, sharing design concepts, colours and sample materials.

The co-designed moquette features a simple design incorporating the Brighton & Hove Buses logo and seaside imagery, reflecting the network the brand-new electric buses operate in.

In addition to the brand-new dementia-friendly seating, all of our buses feature dementia-friendly flooring.

What’s more, all of our drivers and front line colleagues are Dementia Friends which means are able to provide more support and assistance to people living with, or affected by dementia. Our Travel Hub in the city is also part of the Safe Haven Scheme.
