Better Transport Week: Celebrating the power of inclusive and sustainable transport
Today

On Tuesday, Brighton & Hove Buses celebrated the power of inclusive and sustainable transport with a local event marking Better Transport Week 2026.
As an official partner of the annual celebration, charities, community organisations, those with lived experience of barriers to travel and members of Brighton & Hove City Council were invited to the Brighton & Hove Buses Community Hub on North Street for the event.
Attendees had the opportunity to share experiences, highlight barriers, and celebrate progress, helping to inform future improvements and ensure public transport works for everyone.
The event concluded with a ride on a brand-new zero-emission electric bus, highlighting investment in greener travel, alongside co-design and co-production work taking place at Brighton & Hove Buses to help remove barriers and improve accessibility across the network. Representatives from RNID, Thomas Pocklington Trust and Sight Loss Councils shared experiences and information on co-design and co-production during the journey around the city.
Better transport networks create stronger communities, supporting local growth and opportunity. They also play a crucial role in building a fairer future where everyone can travel with confidence, independence, and dignity.
Rupert Cox, Interim Managing Director of Brighton & Hove Buses said:
"Our local event showcased how these principles are being put into practice, bringing together stakeholders and people with lived experience to share conversations around accessibility, inclusion and the progress being made across our bus network.”
Cllr Trevor Muten, Cabinet Member for Transport and City Infrastructure at Brighton & Hove City Council added:
“Better Transport Week highlights the importance of clean, accessible travel for everyone. Buses are a vital lifeline, and we are committed to making travel inclusive, removing barriers, and investing in low and zero‑emission buses to improve air quality. By putting accessibility first, we can build a healthier, more sustainable city for all.”
Transport that is accessible, safe, affordable, reliable, and green does amazing things. It connects communities and brings people together, supports a thriving economy, improves health and wellbeing, and helps tackle climate change and improve air quality.
Brogan McPherson, from Campaign for Better Transport, said:
“Buses are the backbone of local public transport, connecting people to the jobs, services, and communities they rely on, and creating greener, fairer places to live. That’s why it’s fantastic to see Brighton & Hove Buses leading the way during Better Transport Week, showing how cleaner, more accessible buses can break down barriers, cut emissions, and help everyone travel with confidence and independence. When buses work well for everyone, the whole city benefits.”
By bringing together partners, stakeholders and community voices, the event aimed to inspire continued collaboration and underline the importance of inclusive, accessible, and sustainable transport in shaping connected communities and improving everyday journeys.
