On Saturday 19th October, Brighton & Hove Buses will once again partner with Brighton & Hove Black History for a City Wide Bus Tour as part of the Family Day Take Part event for Black History Month.
Family Day Take Part takes place at Brighton Dome, Brighton & Hove Museum and Jubilee Library and is presented by African Night Fever and Brighton & Hove Black History in partnership with Writing Our Legacy. The event is a celebration of diverse arts, culture and heritage, with arts and craft, dance, music, creative writing, heritage talks, workshops, film, fashion demos, performance, food, and the Bus Tour.
Historians Dr Bert Williams MBE and Suchi Chatterjee from Brighton & Hove Black History will lead and narrate the city-wide tour departing from Brighton Dome, which travels to Devils Dyke and other areas of historical interest. Williams co-founded Brighton & Hove’s Black History Project in 2002, which actively promotes racial equality throughout the city.
Ed Wills, Managing Director at Brighton & Hove Buses, said:
“We’re extremely proud to be partnering with Brighton & Hove Black History again, and supporting them with our esteemed Thomas Highflyer bus. Equality is hugely important to us, both within the organisation for the passengers we serve, and we’re proud to be able to support Black History Month with this tour featuring some of Brighton’s most important history.”
The tour will take place onboard the ‘Thomas Highflyer’ bus, named in honour of a young boy rescued in 1866 from a slave ship in Zanzibar. Learn more about the story of Thomas Highflyer here:
