Our Pride Bus Has Been Reimagined in Crochet!

One of our most eye-catching buses has been reimagined in crochet by local crafter Lucy Adams.  

This month we caught up with Lucy at our Conway Street depot to learn more about the project and see the finished article for ourselves - a beautiful crochet tapestry of our Brighton & Hove Pride Bus. 

The Pride Bus features one of our most vibrant liveries in Brighton & Hove and was chosen by local residents in 2025 from a shortlist of designs by our in-house graphic design team, all created in partnership with Brighton & Hove Pride.

Here is what Lucy had to say about the project: 

I love the design of the bus, it's so bright and colourful and I feel lucky to live in a city that has a Pride Bus that travels through it every day. I think that's such an important message and it always makes me smile when I see it. 

The tapestry took about 24 hours in total to complete, spread out over several weeks. Each row takes about 20 minutes because I have to change colours as I go, and I always have something on in the background (like the TV) while I'm crocheting. 

I usually crochet blankets, but I recently discovered tapestry crochet which is the technique I used on this project. I started off with an image and used an online tool to convert it into pixels, where each pixel represents a stitch. This project was my first time doing the tapestry crochet technique, but I enjoyed it so much I went on to also crochet the Martin Fisher Bus in the same style. 

I really want to crochet the Beach Bus next, as I love that bus and the large block colours would make it a great one to do. 

My favourite bus route is the 1, as it gets me everywhere I need to go - like to work or to meet friends. It's a nice simple route and I love watching the world go by while I'm on board.

Her crochet recreation is a real testament to the connection that people feel, not only with the bus itself, but with what it represents."
