The Key

The Key is a smartcard that you can also use easy payment, by simply tapping your smartcard on the ticket machine when boarding the bus. We offer a range of different products on The Key, most of which are stored on your card and will not activate until the first day you use them. Annual tickets and Pay Monthly tickets need to have a specified start date at the point of purchase.

To obtain your The Key smartcard online, or to login to your account to purchase tickets and view transactions, please go to

If you top up online, your new ticket may take up to 5 hours from the point of purchase to be available to use on the bus. This excludes both Annual and Pay Monthly tickets, as these require a predetermined start date of at least 48 hours from the point of purchase. Alternatively, you can obtain or top up a key card instantly at our Travel Shop or from our reception in Hove.

If you are applying for a child card, you will need to provide proof of age and a photo. If you visit us at one of our shops, we can take the photo for you. If you apply online or by post, then you will need to send a photo with the application and proof of age. We will return any original documents or photos you send us with the key card in the post.

Ticket machines are programmed to accept a variety of cards and passes. We recommend storing credit and debit cards separate to key cards to avoid accidentally paying with your bank card. This happens very rarely, but on the rare occasion that a credit or debit card is accidentally scanned instead of a key card, please contact customer service who will assist you further.
