Mobile hearing checks a success

Around 32 people, including Brighton & Hove Mayor Dee Simpson, got on board one of our buses at Churchill Square yesterday (Thursday) for a free hearing screening, in partnership with Action on Hearing Loss.
Many more visited the double-decker to get information and advice about hearing loss, tinnitus, and hearing health; to learn about the latest assistive technology aids; and to take part in free British Sign Language taster sessions.
The event helped mark Deaf Awareness Week (May 6-12), which aims to increase empathy for hearing loss and deafness across the UK, which affects one in six people. It’s also about making our city more inclusive and accessible for people who are hard of hearing or deaf.
Jane Bailey, Head of Volunteering at Action on Hearing Loss, said: “Hearing loss affects 11 million people across the UK, and, as the population ages, more of us will be affected. It was fantastic to speak to over 180 members of the public in Brighton yesterday about how to protect their hearing, and how we can be more deaf aware in our daily lives.
“We are very grateful to our brilliant volunteers, the Audiology Department at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, Brighton and Hove City Council and Brighton and Hove Buses for coming together to raise awareness and provide information and support for local people to address their hearing issues.”
Our Managing Director Martin Harris said: “Well done to Action on Hearing Loss for running another successful mobile hearing screening on board one of our buses, despite the terrible weather.
“Hearing loss can affect people’s confidence when they travel on public transport. All Brighton & Hove Buses have audio-visual announcements and we’re fitting a new hearing loop system to all of our new buses and retrofitting this to others. Our One Stop Travel shop in North St also has this technology.
“We hope this will encourage more people who are hard of hearing or deaf to use our buses and to feel confident when they do.”

Free Helping Hand cards are also available. The cards empower passengers to advise the driver of any extra help they may need. For example, the card can say ‘please face me, I lip read’ on it.
