Brighton & Hove Carers' Card

Discounted travel is available to Brighton & Hove Carers Card holder holders. To redeem discounted bus travel Carer Card holders need to firstly sign up to the discounted travel scheme at one of our offices or travel hubs.

                       

How much is the discount?

Presently any passenger over 18, who isn't a student, would normally pay full adult fare.

Brighton & Hove Carers' Card holders are entitled to student fare prices, which is approximately 33% off adult fare prices. All student fare prices are here. 

Who is eligible for the discount?

In order to be eligible you must firstly have a Brighton & Hove Council Carers Card. You can not apply for the discounted travel without a Carers Card. 

What is the Brighton & Hove Council Carers' Card?

To apply you must:

  • support a child or adult who could not manage without this help
  • not receive payment for supporting this person 
  • support someone who lives in Brighton & Hove

I have a Brighton & Hove Carers' Card- what do I do now to redeem my discounted travel on the buses?

Once you have your Carers Card you should take it to one of our offices or our travel hub and we will provide you with a key card and photo ID which will allow you access to student fare prices. (approximately 33% off adult fares)

Please visit one of the below offices with:

  • your Brighton & Hove council Carers' Card 
  • Photo ID
  • your email address
  • your current address details.

Your picture will be taken by one of our staff and your discounted travel account will be activated on the day for you.

How do I buy tickets once my discount account has been activated?

You will be able to buy tickets in store at Brighton Travel Hub, 27 North Street, Brighton or Head Office at 43 Conway Street or alternatively online, via your key card, at smartbuses.co.uk by using your personal account details.

Can I buy discounted M-Tickets with my Carers' Card?

Yes, but you will need to be verified on the app to show you are eligible before you can activate any tickets. Carers Cards and Compass Cards cannot be verified using the automated system in the mobile app. Holders of these cards need to visit our Brighton Travel Hub at 27 North Street, Brighton, or our Travel Desk at 43 Conway Street after 15 August 2022 to get verified. Please bring your carers card or compass card with you. You’ll need to purchase a ticket first, but you don’t need to use it straight away unless you want to. We’ll help you purchase the right type of ticket and then complete the verification process for you whilst you wait.

Can I buy discounted fares onboard the bus with my Carers Card?

No, you can only purchase tickets in advance using a key card provided by us or an M Ticket. Therefore you must apply to one of our offices or travel hubs first. 

I am a carer working in a care home or a carer working for a care company. Can I get discounted travel?

No. This discounted scheme is only valid for carers who are entitled to the Carers' Card.  Brighton & Hove City Council decide the criteria of who is entitled to their Carers Card. 

Does the person I'm caring for have to travel with me in order to qualify for the discount?

No. Once you have qualified for the discounted travel, by showing your Carers Card you can travel at anytime.

I have an East Sussex Carers' Card - Do I qualify?
