East Sussex Carers' Card

Discounted travel is available to East Sussex Carers Card holder holders. To redeem discounted bus travel Carers' Card holders need to firstly sign up to the discounted travel scheme. All details on how to do this are further down the page.

How much is the discount?

Presently any passenger over 18, who isn't a student, would normally pay full adult fare.

East Sussex, Carers' Card holders are entitled to student fare prices, which is approximately 33% off adult fare prices. All student fare prices are here. 

Who is eligible for the discount?

In order to be eligible you must firstly have an East Sussex, Care for the Carers, Carers Card. You can not apply for the discounted travel without a Carers Card. 

What is the Carers' Card?

The following information is from the Care for Carers webpage 

You can apply for a Carers Card if you live in or care for someone who lives in East Sussex.

The East Sussex Carers Card does three things:

  • Identifies you as a carer, and that someone depends on you in an emergency
  • The option to connect to a back-up respite plan
  • A discount card, giving carers savings at businesses across East Sussex.

I already have an East Sussex Carers' Card - what do I do now to redeem discounted bus travel?

If you have an East Sussex Carers' Card you will need to go directly to Care for the Carers offices in Eastbourne who will verify entitlement to travel. Care for the Carers will then email us directly to confirm your carers card is valid for travel and we will personally post you your key card.

Please take the following information with you to the office:

  • your East Sussex Carers' Card 
  • Photo ID
  • a passport size photograph 
  • your email address
  • your current address details.

Please remember the offices at Brighton Travel Shop and Conway Street will be unable to process your discount for you. 

How do I buy tickets once my discount account has been activated?

You will be able to buy tickets in store at Brighton Travel Shop or Head Office at 43 Conway Street or alternatively online, via your key card, at smartbuses.co.uk by using your personal account details.

Can I buy discounted M-Tickets with my Carers' Card?

Yes. But only once you have registered and received your Brighton & Hove Buses Photo ID card and Keycard. You should always carry your photo ID card when using an M Ticket. 

Can I buy discounted fares onboard the bus with my Carers Card?

No, you can only purchase tickets in advance using a key card provided by us or an M Ticket. Therefore you must apply to one of our offices or travel shops first. 

I am a carer working in a care home or a carer working for a care company. Can I get discounted travel?

No. This discounted scheme is only valid for carers who are entitled to the Carers' Card. Brighton & Hove City Council, West Sussex Council and East Sussex County Council decide who is eligible for these cards.

Does the person I'm caring for have to travel with me in order to qualify for the discount?

No. Once you have qualified for the discount, by showing your Carers' card and hold your key card, you can travel at anytime.

I have a Brighton & Hove Carers' Card - Do I qualify?
